On October 4th, Kevin Abstract released new content to promote his upcoming solo project. The former Brockhampton frontman dropped the single “Blanket,” accompanied by a cryptic music video with horror aesthetics on YouTube
The Texas rapper has finally returned after a long hiatus following Brockhampton’s breakup back in 2022. Abstract has teased an upcoming release with a strange social media campaign taking over his social media. The rapper continues with the theme with “Blanket,” a departure from his usual sound. The song takes an indie pop/rock approach, featuring prominent acoustic and electric guitars, energetic drums, and unique production. The single starkly contrasts with his previous work with Brockhampton but may signal a return to his solo style.
Abstract began his solo career in 2014, when he dropped his debut, “MTV1987”. His other albums include 2016’s “American Boyfriend: A Suburban Love Story” and 2019’s ARIZONA BABY. “Blanket” seems to return to the sound of “American Boyfriend,” an album littered with indie pop influence. This time, the artist has brought a fresh and exciting edginess that he has not previously experimented with.
The single’s release continues with the theme established by Abstract’s social media campaign. The music video, directed by Abstract and Cole Bat, references famous online horror videos, such as paying visual homage to “Don’t Hug Me. I’m Scared.” On Abstract’s website, you can also play a maze game, directly referring to the popular online prank from the 2000s.
The Corpus Christi native has fans eagerly anticipating his next move and possibly a new era for his art. Abstract has always been a creative force, but can the star still make hits without the support of his former bandmates?
This new stage in the artist’s career will include growth and self-discovery, as confirmed by an exclusive with GQ last year: “I’m trying to figure out my life.”
