Jim Jones has revealed that he once passed on the opportunity to sign J. Cole, The Weeknd, and Drake, explaining that at the time, he believed these now-superstar artists lacked the necessary “image.” During an interview on “The Art of Dialogue,” Jones discussed these missed chances, noting that his role as Vice President of Urban A&R at Koch Records in 2009 put him in the position to scout and sign emerging talent.
Jones recalled that J. Cole frequently spent time in his studio, and that he was introduced to Drake’s music by Koch executive Alan Grunblatt. Despite Drake’s lyrical abilities, Jones admitted, “I kept telling him [Grunblatt] he [Drake] had no image. I didn’t understand it, it didn’t connect, but he could rap his ass off.” When it came to The Weeknd, Jones said that personal tragedy clouded his judgment. On the day he traveled to meet the Toronto singer, his close friend Stack Bundles was killed, which left Jones unable to focus on business decisions.
Looking back, Jones acknowledged that he genuinely had the platform and authority at Koch to sign all three artists and that his own success at the label helped elevate its industry status. Despite missing these major opportunities, Jones said he doesn’t dwell on regrets, suggesting that the unique paths of Drake, J. Cole, and The Weeknd ultimately led to their massive success.
