Lil Nas X’s father is coming to his defense.
Earlier in the week, video surfaced of what appears to be Nas’ mother homeless on the streets of Atlanta begging for money. Without knowing the full story, social media critics slammed the “Montero” rapper for not taking care of his mom and getting her help despite all his success.
But his father won’t allow his son to be disparaged. Taking to Instagram on Thursday (April 15), Robert Stafford praised Nas as the “greatest kid” and addressed his mother’s complicated battle with drug addiction.
“Despite what people say @lilnasx is the greatest kid a parent can be BLESSED with,” he wrote. “Although his mom is in a struggle with an addiction she’s STILL a QUEEN and he goes through great lengths to make sure we’re taking care of. Those who have family members and friends dealing with addiction understands that there ain’t enough money you can throw at this situation to make it right.”
Stafford said he felt the need to speak out because people were trying to paint a false narrative. “I dont usually address personal issues publicly but felt like this need to be,” he added. “Please join us in keeping her in your PRAYERS. And to those out there trying to create a false story you wont prosper.”
Nas has not addressed the video, but in an interview with Variety last year, he spoke about his estranged relationship with his mother, while revealing that he tried to get her into a recovery program. “I never really talk about my mom. She’s an addict so we don’t have the closest relationship,” he said. “Even trying to get her better — things didn’t quite work out. But there’s still love.”
He also opened up about his newfound relationship with fame. “The biggest surprise of becoming globally famous? On the outside, everybody loves you — but on the inside, everything [feels] the same.”
Nas earned his second No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 this month with “Montero (Call Me By Your Name).” On Tuesday, he announced that the song was being removed from streaming services. However, the issue appears to have been resolved.
