Rihanna is set to voice Smurfette in the upcoming animated reboot of the Smurfs movie, which debuts in theaters on Friday, July 18. Ahead of the film’s release, the singer attended the premiere at Paramount Theater in Los Angeles and was interviewed by Variety about the possibility of her partner, ASAP Rocky, joining the cast in a potential sequel. Rihanna joked that Rocky could play “Freestyle Smurf” or “Fashion Smurf,” reflecting his influence in both music and fashion. She quipped about the established characters, saying, “Damn, there’s already a Papa Smurf,” acknowledging that John Goodman holds that role in the current film.
Rihanna has previously described her experience voicing Smurfette as an enjoyable venture, noting at 2023’s CinemaCon that animation work offered her flexibility during her third trimester, even allowing her to work in pajamas. She expressed excitement for audiences to see Smurfette’s reimagined character and shared hopes that her involvement would score her “cool points” with her kids.
During her Variety interview, Rihanna also addressed ongoing fan anticipation for her ninth studio album. In her trademark playful style, she responded “Uh-oh,” dubbing herself the “Uh-Oh Smurf.” While she released the soundtrack single “Friend Of Mine” in May, fans continue to eagerly await more new music from the multi-Grammy winner.
