Shaboozey has achieved a major milestone, earning his first-ever No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with his song “A Bar Song (Tipsy).” The track, which was released in April, has amassed over 69 million views on YouTube to date.
This achievement is particularly significant as Shaboozey has become the only Black male artist to top both the Hot 100 and Hot Country Songs charts. He is the second Black artist overall to accomplish this feat, following in the footsteps of Beyoncé, whose song “TEXAS HOLD ‘EM” also reached the top of the charts earlier this year.
In an interview with Billboard, Shaboozey discussed the inspiration behind “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” explaining, “I had been wanting to flip a 2000s song for a while. I just said, ‘Everybody at the bar getting tipsy,’ and then we were like, ‘Oh, s**t!’ The producer picked up the guitar and started playing the chords, and then we started writing, just having fun and being creative.”
The chart-topping track was featured on Shaboozey’s debut album, “Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going,” which also included collaborations with Noah Cyrus, BigXthaPlug, and Paul Cauthen.
Prior to his solo success, Shaboozey had also contributed to two tracks on Beyoncé’s “COWBOY CARTER” album, “SPAGHETTII” and “SWEET * HONEY * BUCKIIN’.” Reflecting on the collaborative process, he shared, “Everyone’s working at the same time and [in] different rooms, and I came in a couple of days and recorded some parts. [Beyoncé] heard them later and liked them. It’s cool how you don’t know until the last moment if your part made it or not.”
Shaboozey’s rise to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart is a testament to his versatility and the widespread appeal of his music, which seamlessly blends elements of country, pop, and R&B. This historic achievement solidifies his status as a rising star in the music industry and a trailblazer for Black artists.
