Big Sean has been candid about his experiences while promoting his upcoming album Better Me Than You. In his recent standout tracks, “On Up” reflects on fatherhood, while “This N That” and “Break The Cycle” address personal struggles.
During a digital cover story with XXL on September 6, Sean responded to accusations that he mimicked Baby Keem and Kendrick Lamar in his song “Yes.” He expressed his initial confusion over the claims but later acknowledged, “I see that. But also, I’ve been doing that since 2014.” He referenced his earlier works, including a clip with Drake, to emphasize that his style has long included similar flows.
When “Yes” was released in July, some listeners noted that Sean altered his vocal pitch to resemble Keem’s style. However, others argued that he was simply tapping into the sound that originally garnered him fans. Despite the speculation, Sean clarified that there is no animosity between him and Lamar, although Lamar’s name has frequently surfaced in discussions about Sean’s music. In an August interview, Sean mentioned that Kendrick’s track “Like That” overshadowed his comeback single “Precision.”
Sean also addressed rumors of a diss aimed at Lamar in his “On The Radar” freestyle, stating, “Y’all goin’ [with] so many narratives. I’m talking to [the] haters who just keep finding something to point out they don’t like ’bout me.”
As he prepares for the release of Better Me Than You, his first album since Detroit 2 in 2020, Sean has already shared several singles, including “Yes,” “Precision,” and “On Up.”
