In the early ’90s, Uncle Luke fought for the right to create explicit music, ultimately taking his battle to the Supreme Court and winning, which significantly influenced the trajectory of hip-hop. Now, decades later, the 2 Live Crew frontman believes that contemporary female rappers owe him compensation for their ability to express themselves freely in their music.
On August 26, Luke called out artists Megan Thee Stallion, Ice Spice, and Sexyy Red during an Instagram Live session. He expressed his frustration, stating, “Male rap is on some bullst right now. I’m sorry. The females are winning. They’re doing everything that I did. I’m still waiting for these girls to send me a fking check.” He specifically mentioned Ice Spice, saying, “I need a check from Ice Spice, who turns her a** around and drops it like it’s hot,” and included a playful note about his friendship with Sexyy Red.
At the time of reporting, none of the artists mentioned had responded to Luke’s comments. However, all three have been enjoying successful runs in 2024. Megan recently concluded her global “Hot Girl Summer Tour,” promoting her self-titled album, which features hits like “HISS,” “Cobra,” and “BOA,” the latter of which is nominated for four awards at the upcoming MTV VMAs.
Ice Spice has also been on a roll, finishing the U.K. and European leg of her “Y2K! World Tour” and continuing through North America, with upcoming shows in Houston, Atlanta, and Miami Beach. Meanwhile, Sexyy Red is touring in support of her May mixtape, In Sexyy We Trust.
Uncle Luke’s comments highlight the ongoing conversation about artistic freedom and the legacy of his fight for expression in hip-hop, as the genre continues to evolve and thrive through its female artists.
