GloRilla Set to Make Her MTV VMAs Debut in 2024

The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards have been moved to Wednesday, September 11th to avoid conflicting with the planned U.S. presidential debate between vice president Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump. In a surprise announcement on Monday, August 12th, MTV revealed the first wave of performers for the rescheduled event, including Memphis rapper GloRilla.

GloRilla, the sole hip-hop act on the initial lineup, is set to make her VMA debut at the ceremony. She joins pop stars Camila Cabello, Sabrina Carpenter, and Chappell Roan on the performer roster.

The “Blessed” rapper is having a breakout year, with three VMA nominations under her belt. She is up for Best Collaboration for “Wanna Be” with Megan Thee Stallion, Best Hip Hop for “Yeah Glo!”, and Best PUSH Performance of the Year for her live rendition of “Lick or Sum”.

GloRilla recently wrapped up her stint as the opening act on Megan’s “Hot Girl Summer Tour” across North America in August. The pair reunited at the 2024 BET Awards to perform “Wanna Be”, their first joint effort which peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song’s music video has amassed over 65 million views on YouTube.

Prior to her VMA nomination, GloRilla dominated airwaves with her February hit “Yeah Glo!” “The song was for myself, and how everybody else took it and made it for them too, they made it 10 times better. The song is full of affirmations for myself but I’m glad that other people got to be able to make it for them, too,” she explained to Rolling Stone.

The rapper also released her summer anthem “TGIF” in June, which has since gained support from Rihanna and Victoria Monét, with the latter dancing to it at the 2024 ESSENCE Festival.

Other notable hip-hop nominees at the 2024 VMAs include Drake, Travis Scott, Gunna, Jack Harlow, Doja Cat, and Kendrick Lamar.
