Reebok, the iconic sports culture brand known for its irreverent style, has officially confirmed the re-release of the legendary “ES22” turf training sneaker, the signature model of football legend Emmitt Smith, originally introduced in 1996. The eagerly anticipated return of the “ES22” (100032753, $180) is scheduled for September 15, and it will be available on Reebok.com and select retailers.
Emmitt Smith, known for wearing the number “22” jersey, holds the distinction of being the league’s all-time leading rusher, a three-time champion, and a 2010 Hall of Fame inductee. His football career is etched in the annals of the sport’s storied history.
“It’s fun to see the evolution of ES22 from the very beginning to now,” commented Emmitt Smith. “It means so much to collaborate with Reebok again for the shoe’s return, for all fans – young and old.”
“In conversations with Emmitt, we talked about what it’s like to be a running back in the pros,” explained Morris. “He said “it’s like getting into 25 car wrecks a day.” First things I thought of were collisions, airbags, and how car frames are designed to protect your body and head. I thought “do that for a shoe”, and that’s how ES22’s frame came into being.”
Reebok’s partnership with Smith began in 1993 when he became the face of the “Preseason” line of turf footwear and cleats designed for off-season training. In 1996, Reebok unveiled the “ES22” turf shoe, a creation by acclaimed Reebok designer E. Scott Morris. This shoe was designed to complement Smith’s explosive playing style, speed, lateral quickness, and to provide protection during intense gameplay.
The “ES22” exemplified Reebok’s distinctive design language of the mid-’90s, showcasing the brand’s cutting-edge technology, including Viz-Hex and Hexalite cushioning, setting a new standard for athletic footwear. Football fans and sneaker enthusiasts alike can relive the legacy of Emmitt Smith with the return of this iconic Reebok classic.
