Young Thug’s lengthy criminal trial has concluded, with the rapper pleading no contest to RICO and gang leader charges on October 31. Superior Court Judge Paige Whitaker sentenced him to five years of time served, along with 15 years of probation and an additional 20 years in custody, which can be commuted upon successful completion of probation.
Initially, prosecutors sought a much harsher sentence of 45 years—25 in prison and 20 on probation—before a plea deal was reached. During the hearing, Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Lamar Williams, expressed remorse, stating, “I take responsibility for my crimes,” and apologized to his family and supporters for the time lost due to his legal issues.
Judge Whitaker urged Young Thug to leverage his influence positively, advising him to use his platform to guide youth away from crime. She remarked, “I know you’re talented… there are ways out of poverty besides hooking up with the powerful guy at the end of the street selling drugs.”
Young Thug faced serious allegations of leading a criminal street gang involved in violent crimes in Atlanta since 2015. His case was part of a broader indictment that included multiple defendants; several others, including frequent collaborator Gunna, accepted plea deals or were dismissed from the trial. In the days leading up to Young Thug’s verdict, two other defendants also accepted plea agreements, while YSL Records artist Yak Gotti opted for a jury trial.
