LOS ANGELES (Raptology) — More than 30 years after his death, Tupac Shakur is set to return to the spotlight in an unexpected way.
During a surprise appearance at Summer Game Fest 2026, Snoop Dogg announced that the late rap icon will appear in Sega and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s upcoming action-adventure game, Stranger Than Heaven. The reveal immediately became one of the event’s most talked-about moments, sparking discussion across both gaming and hip-hop communities.
“The Tupac estate and my son and myself worked very closely together,” Snoop told attendees during the presentation. “It just made sense to put him in this game, because his likeness and his spirit still lives on.”
According to Sega, Tupac will appear as a character named Amaru, an estate-authorized digital recreation created in partnership with Amaru Entertainment, the company that manages the rapper’s legacy. Developers emphasized that the portrayal was created using archival photographs and footage rather than artificial intelligence technology.
The announcement came alongside a new trailer for Stranger Than Heaven, which is scheduled for release on Jan. 15, 2027. The game already features Snoop Dogg as a character named Orpheus and includes appearances from singer Tori Kelly and several other notable performers.
While details about Tupac’s role remain limited, Sega said additional information about the character will be revealed closer to launch.
The move represents the latest effort to preserve and expand Tupac’s cultural legacy through modern media. Since his death in 1996, the rapper’s likeness and music have continued to appear in documentaries, films, tribute performances and digital projects. His posthumous hologram performance at the 2012 Coachella festival remains one of the most memorable moments in hip-hop history.
The gaming announcement also highlights Snoop Dogg’s growing involvement in the video game industry. During the presentation, the Death Row Records founder teased future projects from his gaming venture, Death Row Games, promising more announcements in the coming months.
For many fans, the reveal raises new questions about how legendary artists can be represented in interactive entertainment. For others, it is simply another reminder that Tupac’s influence continues to reach new generations nearly three decades after his passing.
Whether embraced as a tribute or debated as a digital resurrection, one thing is clear: Tupac remains one of the most influential figures hip-hop has ever produced, and his presence continues to transcend music, culture and now video games.
