Micki Ronnae has just released a new tribute single dedicated to George Floyd, an African American man killed during an arrest after a store clerk alleged he had passed a counterfeit $20 bill in Minneapolis. A white police officer named Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck for a period initially reported to be 8 minutes and 46 seconds.
After his death, protests against police brutality, especially toward black people, quickly spread across the United States and internationally.
This song was something that Micki felt the need to make and release, not out of attention, but out of respect and solidarity for the victim, and for solidarity for the Afro Caribbean American population as a whole.
In her own words, Micki said: ”At first, I was hesitant to release this song because I had so many mixed emotions. I wanted it to feel genuine and real. I didn’t want to feel like I was taking advantage of a significant moment in history without adding anything. But I was reminded by someone close to me that this is my voice, and this something that I can do to add to the conversation. Hopefully, it reaches the right ears and makes an impact. Hopefully, it becomes the soundtrack of someone protesting against police brutality. Hopefully, it starts an argument where both parties leave with a little more insight.”
I think it has done just that. You can download and stream the song at the following link:
