Audie B is a talented artist putting Paris on hip-hop’s map. She is known for such 2020 singles as “Never Stop”, “Are You Gangsta”, “Oye Professor” and “Harlequin”. These tracks have seen a major success with her fans worldwide.

Today we had an exclusive chance to interview her:

Raptology: Why did you first start making music?
Audie B: I developed a love for music because I have always grown up around music and the arts. My home was multilingual and I was brought up listening to music such as guru Jazzmatazz, old school French rap and Nina Simone – with an extensive collection of cassette tapes and CDs in jazz, soul, hip hop. I also developed a love for music by having started ballet and dance as a child, I have always danced. I was a professional dancer on cruise ships and have had some acting roles too but I started making music because I wanted to be able to further my arts and perform on stage my own interpretations and tracks, and to share with the world my feelings, emotions, songs and love for music.

Raptology: Who would you say inspired you the most, as an artist?
Audie B: Before being a rap artist full time, I was a full time professional dancer. As an artist, I believe it was my dance teachers who always pushed me and kept me determined. Even though I wasn’t the best technically in ballet for instance, I always had the drive to keep pushing forward. Artistically I have so many influences like Eminem’s journey; but one particularly is that of Emmanuel Jal, an outstanding musical artist with one of the toughest but most determined and inspiring stories.

Raptology: Do you remember the first rhyme you wrote?
Audie B: I do it was called “I want to be” it was I wanna be on top – one of the verses: “Comin’ to grips, that her little girl be big,
Hard work, patience, eyes wide open,
That’s what mummy, told her little girl to the world &
Everything to prove, that’s why she made the move,
From Newy to France, not just to fuckin’ dance
Now there’s tears rollin down, coz she’s tryn’a win,
She wants to make it big but who the f***’s listening” …. Never released on platforms so y’all have the premiere right there haha

Raptology: Have you heard the theory that some musicians write their best music while they’re depressed or going through a bad time?
Audie B: Yes I have. I think all artists go through many ups but also many downs. A lot of the best creations have been by people feeling down and putting their emotions on a canvas, paper, dance or lyrics in the studio. I do get inspired by my sad experiences and it does help release that tension… Like an escape… And I recommend it as it is a release!

Raptology: What’s the best advice you ever received?
Audie B: I don’t know if it’s the best but it always stuck with me: one of my dance teachers while we were learning pointe shoes at ballet saying if your feet didn’t bleed, you didn’t work hard enough, and I carry this until this day, determination, hard work and pushing yourself always is important. Do things to the full to reach your goals!

Raptology: What’s your latest release?
Audie B: Are You Gangsta , released in July and
Never Stop was released in August, it is a song with good summer vibes. I was lucky to be able to film it back home in Australia before Covid. It talks about NEVER STOPPING your dreams, or whatever you put your mind to!

Raptology: What’s your best advice for handling criticism?
Audie B: You will get no’s, and ups and downs, and rejection. I think criticism should always be taken into account if it’s constructive. You need to be able to differentiate though, without getting down on yourself, between constructive criticism and people criticizing to hurt you ( constructive vs nonconstructive). You must always believe in yourself ! We all go through failures but get back up, not only in music and arts, but at school too, I for example failed science experiments but went on to two degrees and a masters! So downs and errors and failures only make you learn to get back up on your feet!

Raptology: What are you focusing your time on now?
Audie B: I’m working on my technique, and diversifying my rap artistry. While waiting on concerts and live performances to start again,I’m also wanting to get involved with the community , helping support other artists too. I’m also doing a lot online, storytime lives on YouTube, and concerts and lives online!

Raptology: How do you currently feel about the state of Hiphop in general?
Audie B: A lot of people think hip hop has lost the authenticity or that a lot of artists are just sell outs. Through the commercialization of hip hop, it’s important for artists to remain true to themselves. Personally I think though, that a lot of hip hop being commercialised has enabled fusion hiphop with electro beats for instance, or asian or arabic sounds . This worldwide mix is also showing that music is an international language, and that’s also the beauty of it!

Raptology: If you could only listen to 3 albums for the rest of your life, what would they be?
Audie B: Ohh tough one, the Fugees album The Score, Joyner Lucas, and Soon E MC, but this is totally tough i have favorite songs from albums that I could listen to for a lifetime!

Raptology: What do you want your legacy to be? How do you want to be remembered?
Audie B: I’d like to be remembered not only as an artist but a person who shared with the world , through her eyes, a passion for the arts, meeting new people, especially having worked on cruise ships where I was able to travel the world and discover new cultures and countries while being able to work my passion! Also as a person who was able to share and motivate people to reach their goals, push themselves to be able to be who they want to be! Worldwide positive vibes.

Hulda Hicks

Hulda Hicks was born in Brooklyn, NY in the late ’70s, at the time when Hip-Hop music was just emerging as an art form. Her entire life was influenced by the culture, having grown up in the epicenter of the creative movement.
As a trained musician and vocalist, Hulda got exposed to the industry in her twenties and has worked on projects with iconic figures such as the Chiffons, the Last Poets, and Montell Jordan, to name a few.
