Abel Meri Speaks “Truth to Power” on His Latest Release

As polarizing issues continue to dominate the news cycle, Abel Meri is making his views on social and political issues crystal clear on his latest studio album “Truth to Power.”

On the project, the DMV-bred MC unapologetically expresses his thoughts on issues ranging from BLM to the Me Too movement. Sonic vibrations from DJ Pain 1, Mike Vince, Victa Beats and Progression Music lay an eclectic backdrop for a thought-provoking timepiece.

The cover art for the album sets the tone portraying a raised fist against a grainy black background, capturing the spirit of the project. The plainness and symbolism of the art and title are unmistakable.

As the music plays, it’s clear the level of thought that went into creating and curating the project from the sound, to the message, to the sequencing. “As an independent artist, I have to wear a lot of hats including artist, A&R, executive producer and street team” said Meri. And while the load is heavy, the control it provides is ubiquitous. Meri added “I can release the type of music I want, on my own timeline, and that freedom is invaluable to an artist.”

The album certainly delivers lyrically with several standout verses. Meri’s flow and cadence change up frequently, even within songs, displaying skillful control of tempo and tone. The title track “Truth to Power” as well as “Cold World” are examples of this unconventional approach. Stylistically, it sounds like two MCs going back and forth a la Jadakiss and Styles P. A demonstration of Meri’s refined skillset.

“Pandemic” is an uncharacteristic beat choice for the rapper and with a futuristic, bass-infused bounce. Meri delivers a weaving flow while again, intermittently shifting gears between a fast and slow pace. The rhymes are poignant and the delivery is perfectly tailored for the beat.

The DJ Pain 1 produced track “Stand Up” is another highlight of the album where Abel performs moving recitals of piercing verses over a soul and rock themed instrumental from the platinum producer.

Meri also takes time to pay homage to hip hop and its pioneers on two tracks; “This is Hip Hop” and “Hip Hop Raised Me.” Said Meri “hip hop has always been the voice of the people, so saluting the OGs that paved the way for us is very important to me, and appropriate considering the theme of the album.”

All-in-all, “Truth to Power” is an enjoyable album with a powerful message worthy of a place in the library of conscious rap fans.

“Truth to Power” is available now on all major digital platforms including Spotify and iTunes.
